# Theros - By The Numbers

/With the Theros pre-release weekend looming, I figured I'd go over some interesting numbers related to the set. This is a very high-level overview, but helps more committed players (like Michael and I) get an idea of what to expect: what the power level will be, where potential archetypes lie, what color(s) are weakest, and what color(s) are strongest.

Thanks to reddit user Myztek and this thread, we have a pretty good snapshot of three pieces of key data in Theros for commons and uncommons (the bread and butter of limited): Converted Mana Cost (CMC for short), Power, and Toughness.

**White**

The average converted mana cost for both commons and uncommons (together) in white is 2.89. For commons it's 2.63 and uncommons it's 3.44.

There are 18 creatures in white at common or uncommon rarity level. The average power (together) for these creatures is 1.66. Separately, the average power of common creatures is 1.69, and uncommons is 1.6.

The average toughness of white creatures (uncommons and commons together) is 2.38. For commons it's 2.38, and uncommons it's 2.4.

Also of note: out of 18 common and uncommon creatures, only three are "vanilla" (have no abilities, no special mechanics, etc). Four white creatures have flying.

**Blue**

The average converted mana cost for both commons and uncommons (together) in blue is 3.17. For commons it's 3 and uncommons it's 3.56.

There are 15 creatures in blue at common or uncommon rarity level. The average power (together) for these creatures is 2.26. Separately, the average power of common creatures is 1.82, and uncommons is 3.5.

The average toughness of blue creatures (uncommons and commons together) is 3.26. For commons it's 3.18, and uncommons it's 3.5.

Also of note: out of 15 common and uncommon creatures, only one is "vanilla" (has no abilities, no special mechanics, etc). Five blue creatures have flying.

**Black**

The average converted mana cost for both commons and uncommons (together) in black is 3.17. For commons it's 3.16 and uncommons it's 3.22.

There are 16 creatures in black at common or uncommon rarity level. The average power (together) for these creatures is 2. Separately, the average power of common creatures is 1.91, and uncommons is 2.2.

The average toughness of black creatures (uncommons and commons together) is 2.5. For commons it's 2.45, and uncommons it's 2.6.

Also of note: out of 16 common and uncommon creatures, only one is "vanilla" (has no abilities, no special mechanics, etc). Two black creatures have flying.

**Red**

The average converted mana cost for both commons and uncommons (together) in red is 2.89. For commons it's 2.89 and uncommons it's 2.88.

There are 15 creatures in red at common or uncommon rarity level. The average power (together) for these creatures is 2.6. Separately, the average power of common creatures is 2.3, and uncommons is 3.2.

The average toughness of red creatures (uncommons and commons together) is 2.26. For commons it's 2.1, and uncommons it's 2.6.

Also of note: out of 15 common and uncommon creatures, only one is "vanilla" (has no abilities, no special mechanics, etc). ZERO red creatures have flying.

*EDIT: While writing this article, I found that the spreadsheet data was missing some cards. I've only found two red cards missing, but will update the article as needed if I find any more discrepancies. *

** ****Green**

The average converted mana cost for both commons and uncommons (together) in green is 3.11. For commons it's 3.06 and uncommons it's 3.22.

There are 15 creatures in green at common or uncommon rarity level. The average power (together) for these creatures is 2.8. Separately, the average power of common creatures is 2.8, and uncommons is also 2.8.

The average toughness of green creatures (uncommons and commons together) is 3.2. For commons it's 3.2, and uncommons it's also 3.2.

Also of note: out of 15 common and uncommon creatures, only two are "vanilla" (have no abilities, no special mechanics, etc). ZERO green creatures have flying.

**Overview**

While it's hard to make any concrete decisions about the meta of Theros solely based on these numbers, they definitely help. In terms of CMC for example, blue, black, and green are all more expensive overall than red and white. When comparing average power/toughness among commons and uncommons, green leads the pack with 2.8/3.2. Blue is close behind with 2.26/3.26, followed by red with 2.6/2.26. Black and white finish up the numbers with 2/2.5 and 1.66/2.38, respectively. Given blue's number of flyers, high average power/toughness, and no shortage of combat tricks/"removal", it's definitely my favorite going into the pre-release.
